Jus by Julie – A Review

*Disclosure: I was not contracted by Jus by Julie to write this review.  I purchased the program on my own and did not receive any compensation for this review.*

Lemon, Turmeric, Banana, Oh my!

Even though we’re not talking about lions, tigers, and bears here, let’s be real, the idea of eliminating solid food from your diet for any amount of time seems just, if not more, terrifying than coming face-to-face with a ferocious beast with razor sharp teeth.

What made me decide to do a juice cleanse, you ask? In all honesty, it was a hasty decision. I was online and saw an advertisement for a cleanse and had one of those moments where my head told me “YOU HAVE TO DO THIS.” It didn’t take much convincing, but then again, I do love to try health products and knew that if anything, I may shrink my tummy a bit and clean out my digestive tract. I ended up choosing the Jus by Julie cleanse because in comparison with the local juice bars, it was much more in-line with my budget. I also liked the fact that Jus by Julie blends their juices as opposed to cold pressing them.  Blending juice entails using the whole fruit or vegetable which means that no valuable nutrients are lost in the process!

As I mentioned in my last post, I am a repeat customer of Jus by Julie. I enjoyed my first run with the cleanse so much so that three weeks later I was ready for my next! The first time I did the cleanse I ordered the 3-day cleanse.  Depending how ambitious you are and what your goals are, you can order up to a 5-day cleanse. As a first-time juicer I wanted to be realistic, but also wanted to challenge myself, so the 3-day cleanse seemed like a logical choice for me.

It’s no secret that juice cleanses are not cheap. Unfortunately, cost tends to be a barrier to most healthful choices, but I have good news! Jus by Julie often offers discount codes to use at the time of purchase for special offers, free shipping, etc., but I’ve found the most cost- efficient option (the majority of the time) is offered through Groupon. If you decide to utilize the Groupon offer you will pay $69.99 for your 3-day cleanse and $25 for shipping. The 1-day cleanse is $29.99 plus shipping and the 5-day cleanse is $114.99 plus shipping. These prices may also vary if Groupon is running a special offer on top of these offers.

Jus by Julie is also very flexible with shipping options. The second time I did a cleanse, the juices were shipped overnight and showed up to my door the following afternoon. The juices do not require a signature, but if you are able to be home at the time of delivery, it is best to get the juice either to the fridge or the freezer (depending on when you plan on starting) as soon as possible. I put mine in the freezer and set them out on the counter each night to thaw out. I’ve found that this is the best method in keeping the juices as fresh as possible.

When you receive your cleanse you will notice that the bottles are banded in groups of six, 16 fl. oz. bottles and are numbered from 1-6. Follow the numbers each day and you can’t go wrong. I did some preliminary research before ordering and upon receiving my juices, realized that it is a toss- up as to which juices you get in your shipment.  Unless you select your own juices through the Jus by Julie website (Groupon code not applicable here) you won’t know which flavors you’ll be receiving until you open up your box. This made me nervous to begin with, but when I started to realize that the majority of the juices were REALLY great, it didn’t matter to me as much and I would certainly go this route again.

I wanted to take the time to focus on the individual juices I’ve tried so that you may have an idea of what to expect, OR in the case that you may want to venture out and create your own cleanse. Hopefully I can provide some information that you may not be able to gather from the website and assist in creating a cleanse that you will be pleased with! I’ve given each juice a ranking from 1 to 5 stars, indicated their number in the daily cleanse sequence, listed the break down of ingredients, and noted my personal experience with each juice as well as some of the health benefits you’ll get out of their ingredients. Please note that your palate may differ from mine, or you may have a tolerance for a larger variety of textures than I do. These are simply my opinions and yours could very well differ. I encourage you to try something that may be outside of your comfort zone!

“Strawberry Dream”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (5)

Ingredients: Strawberries, Almonds, Beets, Rice Milk, Agave.

Notes/Benefit: I was not thrilled with this juice. I was expecting a pleasant strawberry milk taste and got more of a Pepto-Bismol- feel. The blended almonds leave a gritty texture in your mouth and mixed with the rice milk can almost be described as “chalky” tasting. I did not enjoy the strawberry and beet combination. I was only able to drink about 3/4 of this juice but if you were able to drink the entire bottle you’d feel full. Regardless of the taste, beets and strawberries are packed with heart-healthy antioxidants. Almonds contain nutrients that boost brain health and are an excellent source of hunger control while rice milk promotes cellular growth and regeneration which is great news for your skin!

“Island Coconut”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (5)

Ingredients: Coconut Meat, Coconut Milk, Maple Syrup, Cinnamon.

Notes/Benefit: Two things that this juice has going for it is great flavor and the fact that it leaves you with a feeling of fullness. The intensity of the cinnamon will hit you first followed by coconut. Unfortunately the favorable taste was not sufficient enough for me to want to finish this “juice.” The best I can describe the consistency is thick, like tapioca pudding-thick. It can be spoon fed, which is not something I personally look for in a juice.  Apparently this is one of Jus by Julie’s more popular juices, so you may just have to try it out for yourself! The coconut meat will provide you an excellent source of fiber which is great for digestion as well as providing a sense of satiety. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in antioxidants.

“PB & Jus”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in Sequence: (5)

Ingredients: Natural Peanut Butter, Strawberry, Banana, Rice Milk.

Notes/Benefit: I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of the peanut butter, strawberry, and banana combination. The good thing about this juice is that if you like these flavors together then you are in for a treat! It is basically a banana split in a bottle. The peanut butter (a great source of protein) and banana adds quite a bit of substance making it more of a smoothie consistency. You will feel full after drinking it and all of the ingredients are perfectly balanced. You can taste them all in each sip! Peanut butter, strawberries, and bananas are all rich in potassium and assist in reduction of high blood pressure. Rice milk promotes cellular growth and regeneration which is crucial in keeping your skin looking healthy!

“Citrus Tur-eamcicle”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (5)

Ingredients: Turmeric, Orange, Coconut Meat, Vanilla, Maple Syrup, Ginger.

Notes/Benefit: It took me a few sips to get used to the overall flavor of this juice. The ginger and turmeric are relatively strong, but the orange and the sweet flavors of the vanilla and maple syrup are great combating flavors. Though there is a lot going on with this juice, I was pleasantly surprised. It is a smoothie consistency (very filling) due to the blended coconut meat beefing it up. Turmeric is typically used as a supplement that aids in inflammation, and supports stomach and skin health. Coconut meat also has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes cardiovascular health.

“Green Radiance”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (3)

Ingredients: Spinach, Apples, Strawberries, Mango, Coconut Oil, Ginger.

Notes/Benefit: As the name suggests, this is a green juice. The flavors are very well-balanced, but the ginger flavor is pretty distinct. When you drink the juice, the coconut oil will coat your lips. It feels like a natural lip balm.  The juice is a smoothie consistency and goes down pretty smoothly, but does coat your throat. You will feel full after consumption. Ginger has multiple health benefits such as anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to remove excess gas build up from your system. The health benefits of spinach are never ending. It is enriched with many vitamins and minerals, boosts metabolism, and is great for ocular and neurological health. Coconut oil is beneficial for your skin and hair.

“X-treme Greens”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (6)

Ingredients: Spinach, Kale, Orange, Pineapple, Hemp Seeds, Lime, H2O.

Notes/Benefit: As the name suggests, this is a another great green juice. There is no hiding the taste of spinach and kale, so I am surprised that I enjoyed it so much. The tangy citrus flavors of the orange and lime also come through pretty strongly. You may find yourself gulping this juice down, as the greens are densely packed in. You can also taste the tiny hemp seeds.  If you can get passed the texture then you will appreciate the taste and feel extremely full after drinking the entire bottle. Spinach and kale are both leafy green powerhouse vegetables that offer a large amount of vitamins and minerals and hemp seeds support digestive health and have been found to aid in stress reduction.

“Matcha Chia”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (5)

Ingredients: Matcha, Spinach, Chia Seeds, Apple, Mango, Cinnamon, Pineapple, Lemon, Coconut Milk.

Notes/Benefit: I was hesitant about this juice for a couple of reasons. If you know anything about matcha, then you knew this was a green juice before I even mentioned it. Aside from it being green, my hesitancy also came from the fact that I had never had it before. I am still unsure of what matcha tastes like exactly, because the cinnamon was so potent. It is a smoothie consistency (very filling) and has a slight velvety texture, but you won’t be gulping down this one. Not only is matcha tea a natural energy booster, it also increases immune defense. Chia seeds provide the benefit of digestive health and weight control and cinnamon assists with regulating blood sugar levels in the body.

“Chia Berry”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (4)

Ingredients: Blended Chia Seeds, Pomegranate, Strawberry, Lemon, H2O, Agave.

Notes/Benefit: This juice is delicious, very refreshing, and moderately filling. The pomegranate, strawberry, and lemon flavors are very balanced and the natural sugars of the fruit and agave nectar are not overbearing. The chia seeds will settle at the bottom of the bottle, so you will need to continuously shake the juice to keep an even distribution. Chia seeds provide the benefit of digestive health and weight control. As you may be aware, pomegranate juice is great for your skin as it regenerates your skin cells and prevents dark spots. It also strengthens your hair and reduces detachment.

“Sweet Spin”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (1)

Ingredients: Kale, Spinach, Pineapple, Banana, Mango, Rice Milk.

Notes/Benefit: This is my favorite green juice that Jus by Julie offers. It’s more of a smoothie consistency (very filling) and a great way to start the morning. The best part about this juice is that you can’t taste the greens. It’s perfectly blended and the pineapple, banana, and mango come through much stronger than the spinach and kale. Most of the health benefit that you’re going to get from this juice will come from the spinach and kale.  Both are leafy green vegetables that offer a large amount of vitamins and minerals.  Rice milk promotes cellular growth and regeneration which is great for your skin!

“Watermelon Wizard”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (5)

Ingredients: Watermelon, Pineapple, Strawberries, Lemon Juice, Rosemary, Maqui Berry Powder.

Notes/Benefit: This juice is my absolute FAVORITE and it may be yours as well, if you like watermelon as much as I do! It is a lighter juice that is so fresh and flavorful and moderately filling. I could sip on it all summer long! I’d say out of all the other flavors, you can also taste and smell the fresh rosemary. I personally had to do some of my own research on the maqui berry as it is a fruit I had never tried before. It is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties as well as potential properties that counteract skin aging. Rosemary is found to have affects on oral health and cognitive function.

“Spicy Lemonade”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (2)

Ingredients: Lemon, Maple Syrup, Cayenne Pepper, H2O.

Notes/Benefit: This juice was another favorite of mine. It is a thin juice (mildly filling) that tastes just like the lemonade you’re used to drinking with a surprising, spicy kick from the cayenne pepper. I don’t typically like spicy foods or beverages, but the maple syrup challenges the pepper flavor and I like the outcome. Make sure to shake this juice every-so-often or the cayenne pepper will settle to the bottle. Your last drink will be an extra spicy shot if you don’t. Cayenne pepper and lemon both promote good digestion, weight loss, and build up a body’s immunity.

“Spicy Pomegranate”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (2)

Ingredients: Pomegranate, Lemon, Maple Syrup, Cayenne Pepper, H2O.

Notes/Benefit: This juice is also a top contender on my list. It is a thinly blended juice (mildly filling) that goes down easily and tastes great! The pomegranate flavor is dominate and the cayenne pepper makes you want to go “ahhhh” after every drink! Just as the “Spicy Lemonade” required frequent shaking, this juice does as well to ensure your last gulp isn’t full of cayenne pepper. Pomegranate juice is great for your skin as it regenerates your skin cells and prevents dark spots. It also strengthens your hair and reduces detachment.  Cayenne pepper and lemon both promote good digestion, weight loss, and build up a body’s immunity.

“Berry Blend”

black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256black_star_u2605_icon_256x256

Number in sequence: (4)

Ingredients: Strawberry, Blueberry, Banana, Coconut Milk, Agave.

Notes/Benefit: If you love other types of mixed berry products, then you’ll love this juice. It is a smoothie consistency (very filling) and is the perfect blend of berry flavor and creamy texture from the banana and coconut milk components. Blueberries are a great source of vitamin C which increases collagen production in the skin which can also play a key role in preventing acne, dark spots, and wrinkles.  They also contain calcium which is great for increasing bone density and elasticity. Jus by Julie actually compares this juice to “The Fountain of Youth” on their website. Makes sense, right?

Have you tried the Jus by Julie cleanse and have a favorite that I did not mention? Drop a comment below with your recommendation!

Overall, I love this cleanse and from all of the four and five stars you can tell that I think the juices are really yummy!  I wasn’t in on the cleanse to lose weight, necessarily, but I did end up losing 4 lbs. on my first 3- day cleanse.  My tummy felt so flat and I was digesting on a healthy cycle. I was amazed at how small my stomach felt afterwards. I didn’t eat as much solid food for a good time following the cleanse.  I would recommend it to anyone!
